Asbestos Exposure in Libby, Montana

Asbestos Exposure in Libby, Montana

The unfortunate town of Libby, Montana has been aptly named “Ground Zero” for asbestos exposure. The W.R. Grace & Company, a mining company based out of Libby, has a long history of exposing its workers and town residents to asbestos. In fact, six W.R. executives have been indicted on criminal charges for their role in covering up the exposure.

Asbestos is a mineral that has been shown to cause mesothelioma, a deadly carcinoma, and other asbestos-related diseases including asbestosis. It was commonly used through the 20th century in building and manufacture of countless items because of its fire retardant and other qualities.

W.R. Grace & Company owned and operated many asbestos and vermiculite mines throughout Libby. Although vermiculite itself is a completely safe material, it has been found that some mined vermiculite, including that mined in Libby, can contain unsafe amounts of asbestos.

Currently, at least half of the residents of Libby, Montana have been diagnosed with asbestos related conditions. This is in addition to the over 200 residents that have already died from asbestos exposure.

We still don’t know the full extent of the damages done by the mining industry in Libby. Because of the prolonged and high level of exposure that Libby residents faced, the town is the subject of a great deal of ongoing research to learn more about asbestos exposure and disease progression.
